An official study estimates that Vaca Muerta contains about 30 billion barrels of technically recoverable crude oil, an 89 percent increase from the previous estimate. The expansion of the viable drilling area into southern Mendoza and Río Negro further strengthens the formation's importance to Argentina's long-term oil production and export prospects.
