Trump Imposes Emergency Tariffs on Colombia Following Immigration Dispute

US President Donald Trump announces 25% tariffs on Colombian goods, escalating to 50% within a week, alongside visa restrictions.
US President Donald Trump has announced a series of punitive measures against Colombia, including emergency tariffs and visa restrictions, in response to the country’s refusal to accept deported migrants from the United States.

The measures were revealed in a post on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.

The decision follows the refusal by Colombian President Gustavo Petro to accept two flights carrying migrants deported from the US.

Trump stated that Petro’s decision jeopardizes US national security and emphasized that these actions are only the beginning.

He reiterated that the US would not allow Colombia to breach its legal obligations concerning the reception and return of individuals the US considers problematic.

In addition to the visa restrictions, the US will impose an emergency tariff of 25% on all Colombian imports, with plans to increase this rate to 50% within a week.

These measures reflect escalating tensions between the two nations over immigration issues.

Earlier on Sunday, President Petro announced that his government would not accept any flights carrying deported migrants from the US until a protocol is created that ensures the respectful treatment of these individuals.
